Harold and his friends are super excited! It’s their school sports day. How will they prepare for their race? And how will they deal with their nerves? Yikes!
Overview
Using a school athletics carnival as an example, Healthy Harold and students learn how to prepare physically and mentally for important events in their lives. Key messages include eating a healthy meal, staying hydrated, ways to deal with nerves during a challenging situation.

Ready, Steady, Go! – Tuning In Lesson – Wonderful Water
Before Healthy Harold’s visit, try this interactive lesson with your class.
Harold will help students appreciate just how wonderful water is and how many different ways it can help them stay healthy. They’ll explore how much water they need to drink and consider other ways to stay healthy… including eating the right foods and getting enough sleep.
Activities include: • a memory challenge • partner sharing • interpreting clues • teamwork

To be completed with your class after the Life Ed visit.This is the core part of the program. If you have booked a visit with Life Ed, this will be delivered in the Mobile Learning Centre or in your classroom by a specialist Life Ed Educator.

Ready, Steady, Go! – Extending Lesson 1 – Helping Yourself, Helping Each Other
Nerves before a race, an important event or scary situation can stop you from doing your best. This module teaches students ways to regulate their emotional responses through strategies such as relaxation, mindful breathing and positive self-talk push away negative thoughts. This will empower them mentally to try new and exciting activities.
Activities include • click & learn activities • partner activities • acting out emotions • interpreting body clues • practising saying positive things

Ready, Steady, Go! – Extending Lesson 2 – Activate!
Harold joins students in exploring ways to keep safe & ready for new challenges. The benefits of exercise are linked to students’ own lives. Key safety messages embrace sun safety, playground fights, classroom behaviour, road safety, cyber safety, stranger danger and pool safety.
Activities include • think, pair, share • memory games • click & learn activities • active games • active class game • at home follow up activity

Step 4: Booster Sessions
The Booster sessions videos and discussion guides are the last part in the 4-Step program. A discussion guide with questions and suggested answers is attached with each booster session video below. To meet all of the outcomes for this module, teachers are encouraged to use the discussion guides to extend student learning and observe student understanding of the content covered.
Ready, Steady, Go! – Session 1 – Healthy Body
Harold prepares for his big race by being well rested, wearing a hat, eating healthily and staying hydrated. Students help sort foods into ‘everyday’ foods and ‘sometimes’ foods. Nutrition is discussed further, in terms of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals. The benefits of physical activity are also considered.

Ready, Steady, Go! – Session 2 – Healthy Mind
Harold has pre-race nerves, which leads to discussion on the physical symptoms of nerves, and what’s normal and not. Students learn strategies to help them calm down when they’re nervous. When the 4th for the relay team doesn’t turn up and Harold must run twice, he has to think positive thoughts to help him through the race.

Ready, Steady, Go! – Session 3 – Staying Safe
Sun safety, healthy lunches and the importance of staying hydrated are revisited along with staying safe at school and in the community. A quick game of sports charades is topped off with a ribbon for Harold and his relay team. Looks like his positive self-talk really paid off.
