For students in Foundation / Early Stage 1 / Kindergarten / Prep / Reception / Transition
Harold and his friends have gone camping, but when someone gets injured on a hiking expedition, the friends must work out how to seek help, and the people who can help them in an emergency.
Overview
Safety Rules educates children about safe and unsafe environments and safe and unsafe situations and behaviours online, and places and trusted adults we can go to for help. It provides a fun interactive learning experience that aims to empower children to make safer choices. Investigating how to seek out safe spaces and situations and how friends can support and care for each other.
Life Ed programs are not just a visit, they’re a 4-step multimodal pathway! So make use of the whole learning pathway… Harold’s pre-visit lesson; the Life Ed educator visit; 2 post-visit lessons, booster sessions and the parent communication.

Safety Rules – Tuning In Lesson – Emergencies
Students will actively think about friendships, making friends and all the emotions that happen along the way. They’ll also develop their skills of self-awareness and social awareness. The idea of friendship as a journey is introduced and students will learn how to be a good friend and have a good friend.
Activities include: • think, pair, share • class votes • acting out ideas and actions • guided reflection

Step 2: Life Ed Visit
To be completed with your class after the Life Ed visit.This is the core part of the program. If you have booked a visit with Life Ed, this will be delivered in the Mobile Learning Centre or in your classroom by a specialist Life Ed Educator.

Safety Rules – Extending Lesson 1 – Help! I Need Somebody
This interactive lesson reinforces how to deal with an emergency. Practising what to say and do can really help you be prepared. The roles of ambulances, paramedics, fire fighters & police are explained as well as when to dial 000.
Activities include • true or false discussions • role playing • partner activities • at home discussion starters

Safety Rules – Extending Lesson 2 – Being Safe Inside & Out
Safety is everyone’s job. This lesson reinforces ways to stay safe inside and outside. Learning includes recognising safe & unsafe environments, safe behaviours and adults who help keep us safe.
Activities include • partner & group activities • share back activities • miming & guessing • sorting • home extension activities

Step 4: Booster Sessions
The Booster sessions videos and discussion guides are the last part in the 4-Step program. A discussion guide with questions and suggested answers is attached with each booster session video below. To meet all of the outcomes for this module, teachers are encouraged to use the discussion guides to extend student learning and observe student understanding of the content covered.
Safety Rules – Session 1 – Staying Safe
Health & safety messages are introduced in the context of a fun story as Harold goes on his first ever camping adventure. Safety is highlighted and the meanings of common safety signs are examined, along with safety rules at home, school & the community.

Safety Rules – Session 2 – Seeking Help
Fun meets safety messages as Harold, Red and Boots go on a hike and Boots falls and twists her ankle. Harold springs into action to get help. Ways of finding help are considered, along with the trusted adults who can help in various emergency situations.

Boots is glad she had special friends to help her when she had her accident. Students consider who is in their own safety network. Ways of being a good friend like Harold are revisited.
